New York, Ho!
Editor’s note: I am not referring to the city or state of New York, or person residing or visiting there as a “ho”. It’s just sort of the thing you say when you start a journey.
Lots of you are descending on the (arguably less awful than it has been at points in the past) Javits Center for New York Comic Con, and it’s time to point out who all you might want to visit at their booths/tables (non-exhibiting creators got a discussion yesterday, but I missed one: Spotlight Guest Bryan Lee O’Malley is around today, tomorrow, and Saturday, with a spotlight panel and autograph session tomorrow).
Remember as we throw locations at you: the Javits follows the same numbering scheme as the city streets. Low numbers are downtown, high numbers are uptown, and Artists Alley is in that extension at the far northern end of the building, accessed on the 2nd level. In fact, let’s start there. One of the things that distinguishes NYCC is that they have an absolutely stellar Artists Alley — airy, with some natural light coming, easy to walk around, and handy ATMs. In fact, it’s probably one of the best Artists Alleys I’ve seen and does not suffer from the mission creep in who gets a booth on the main floor. I mean, I like Cirque du Soleil as much as is reasonable, but do they need a booth (number 1336, by the way) at what’s nominally a comics show?
- So: Artists Alley is where you’ll find the likes of Maki Naro (table W5) practically next door to Jim Zub & Edwin Huang (table W16), and just down the hall from Karl Kerschl and studiomate Andy Belanger (table N11, and an odds-on favorite place for their buddy Cameron Stewart to be hanging out if he gets a free moment), Chris Eliopoulos (table R9), and occasional Brad Guigar collaborator Chris Giarrusso (table D3).
- Since we’re at the north end of the Javits on exiting Artists Alley, we’ll start at the high-numbered booths with webcomics marketplace TopatoCo in the northwest corner at booth 3164. From there, face south and head for the 2200 aisle, where you’ll find a cluster of Homestucks at What Pumpkin (booth 2274), the Cyanide & Happiness lads (booth 2247), Uncas Lar and Sohmer (booth 2246), and :01 Books (booth 2237; their extensive signing schedule can be found here).
- From here on out, there’s some distance to cover and no clear clusters. You’ve got some of the signings mentioned yesterday at Oni Press (booth 1928), other signings at BOOM! Studios (booth 1344), and The First Law of Mad Science, probably the last indy webcomic left on the main floor (booth 581). If you have a couple bucks left, slide back up to the 1500 aisle and drop a few bucks in the can for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (booth 1564).
- If you’re around NYCC tonight, Strong Female Protagonist creator Molly Ostertag is part of a panel on self-publishing (7:15pm, room 1A01); Kickstarter’s is sending comics-related team members to talk funding (Friday at 3:15pm, room 1A24). On Saturday you can see what’s up with Bee & Puppycat (3:00pm in room 1A10) or watch the C&H guys and Joel Watson get into a sketch jam (8:00pm, room 1A10). Oh, and in case you head to any of these panels, or ones mentioned earlier, remember that this year NYCC is clearing panel rooms at the end of each session, so no camping.
