Everybody I Know Is In Seattle
Well, me and my dog will just have to have fun by ourselves. So there.
- In what’s becoming an annual tradition, Kate Beaton is nominated for a Doug Wright Award, recognizing the best in Canadian comics and graphic novels. Last year, she took the award for Best Emerging Talent, and this year she’s nominated for the Pigskin Peters Award, which recognizes experimental or non-narrative comics, for Never Learn Anything From History. Mark my words, in a few decades they’ll just retire this one and create a new award named after her. The awards will be presented at TCAF, 7pm on Saturday, 8 May.
- Webcomics character (and creator) cameo day over at Shortpacked!, as David Willis ramps up the romance inherent in toy collector circles. In case the storyline isn’t offensive enough to those threatened by THE GAY, allow me to draw your attention to the pre-orders for Shortpacked!’s third book, appropriately titled Shortpacked! Is Totally Gay, with cover art to match. Because honestly, the only thing more homoerotic than GI Joe is Top Gun.
- The finest comic retelling of the Twelve Labors of Herakles since Matt Wagner brushed up against it is now up for pre-order. What, you didn’t realize that Gastro and Phobia were telling stories parallel to the oldest of Greek myths? Even once you knew that Alcides was in the storyline? Yeah, I’m guessing that G&P did all the work, and Big H got all the press.
WHO COULD BE OFFENDED BY WILLIS’S PORTRAYAL OF A GAY RELATIONSHIP. IT’S SO VANILLA. WHY EVEN SAY THAT. BY SAYING THAT YOU MAKE IT IMPLICIT THAT SOMEONE SHOULD BE OFFENDED, GARY. YOU MAKE IT SEEM SHAMEFUL TO BE GAY. IT’S LIKE: YOU SEE A GAY PERSON, YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS IS “THIS IS OFFENSIVE–NO, WAIT, I DON’T THINK THAT’S OFFENSIVE, THAT’S RIGHT, I DON’T–BUT SOMEONE ELSE MIGHT!!!”
