• New Jellaby, courtesy of creator Kean Soo. I miss Jellaby something fierce, but as long as Keaner’s working on new stuff, I suppose we can all muddle through somehow.
• New Dr McNinja collection, which I think I mentioned I picked up last month. To elaborate on my micro-est of reviews then, Timefist makes the extremely involved, mythology-heavy, and long-running Army of One–Space Savers–Futures Trading mega-arc much easier to follow than a page-at-a-time pace.

  Also, it has the entirely adorable Judy Gets A Kitten and the Axe Cop crossover, Stolen Pizza, Stolen Lives. As the years go by, Christopher “Doc” Hastings becomes only more madcap, somehow.

• Speaking of Axe Cop, we now have a premiere date for the Axe Cop animated series: Saturday, 27 July, 11:00pm on FOX.
• Kristen Siebecker, original showrunner of MoCCA Fest, and certified sommelier, is continuing her work demystifying the fruit of the vine and helping people learn to drink like grown-ups (that is, to be able to tell what’s good from what’s bad, and to get into the habits of drinking better stuff, not more stuff). Her previous iterations of the Popping Your Cork series have been noted with discount codes, and the next session is no exception.

  Those of you¹ in Manhattan on Wednesday, 30 January from 6:15pm can spend 90 minutes learning about wine that makes the winter less dreary, and this time she’s got a chef buddy coming by with tasty little nibbles to go with. Until, you know, the nor’easter shows up later today; ordinarily it wouldn’t be a concern, but I’m looking at this one tree that I’m certain thinks it got left out when all the cool trees got knocked down by Superstorm Sandy last week. There’s also a boil water order for my town, the furnace is acting up now that it’s really getting cold out, I see snow coming down, and — most horrifyingly — I have to go the the MVC and renew my driver’s license. But at least Donald Trump is in a deep existential funk over the election, so I guess it all balances out.

• In the meantime, I’ll note that while I was without power last week, the ninth iteration of Child’s Play launched, and has accumulated US$300,000 in the first week. Good start, nerds, let’s see if you can better the US$3.5 million (give or take) that was the 2011 tally.
• More numbers I missed last week: Chris Hallbeck hit Maximumble #500 last Thursday, which when considered with its companion piece Minimumble (approaching #250) and original-flavor The Book of Biff, means that Hallbeck is drawing five panels of comics per day (one in color), five days a week, and I can’t recall the last time he missed an update of any of the three. Taking them all together, he’s put up 2403 updates and that number goes up by fifteen every week. Oh, and he managed to get his kid on national TV this morning; not bad for a man who is nearly 37% eyebrows by mass.
• Readers of this page who like comics and booze¹ may recall² that at the end of the summer I pointed you towards a New York City event aimed at teaching wine newbies how to tell good stuff from bad hosted by Kristen Siebecker. The next session of Popping Your Cork (with an emphasis on drinking good stuff at Thanksgiving) will take place next Wednedsay, 14 November at 6:15pm, spots are filling fast, and if you use the discount code THANKS20 will get 20% off the session price. • Okay, promised you booze, let’s talk booze. Kristen Siebecker may not be a name that you recognize, but you should; aside from being married to indy comics creator Alex Robinson, she was the one responsible for organizing the first iteration of MoCCA Fest, which was a massive success and became a showcase for webcomickers for years afterwards.

  She’s also a fully-qualified sommelier and is starting a new series of wine-appreciation classes, so if you’ve ever wanted to learn exactly what it was you were drinking and why you liked (or didn’t like) it, you could do a hell of a lot worse than checking out her class.

  Popping Your Cork: Tips For New Wine Drinkers starts at 6:15pm and runs for an hour and a half or so on Wednesday, 12 September at Simple Studios, 134 West 29th Street (2nd floor) in Manhattan. It’ll set you back twenty bucks, for which you’ll get tasted on three wines, learn some useful stuff, and maybe if this becomes a regular event, it’ll take on a comics-maker overtone.
