Elephant In The Room
Gettin’ back into the swing of webcomics, blogging, all that. I’ll have some things to say about a preview of Machine of Death 2 which I’ve been reading, and also Faith Erin Hicks’s Friends With Boys, the print version of which the good folks at :01 Books were kind enough to send me a preview copy. The delays in all of these things were caused by family, merriment, and bread. So much bread¹.
- Yesterday’s webcomic news was pretty much dominated by Penny Arcade and The Story of There Is So Bad PR, which was fascinating to watch. It’s been chronicled throughout the gaming press, discussed pretty thoroughly by Webcomics Dot Com, and just keeps on giving. For my money, though, the best expression of the meme came from, of all places, Geico Insurance’s twitterfeed.
The lesson here is not Don’t screw with the customer, the lesson is not even Whoever runs Geico’s twitter account is a genius. The lesson is Actions have consequences, whether it’s threatening to unleash your PR smear machine (who may be too busy to create their own website), or the fact that Mike Krahulik is willing to adopt scorched earth policies on your ass, even at the cost of wanging his own server.
- Speaking of actions vis-a-vis consequences, there are some to be found in Vera Brosgol’s tragic, haunting, beautiful, wordless, did I say haunting?, and more than slightly creepy What Were You Raised By Wolves?, which if you haven’t seen you need to stop everything right now and go read it. I would read a whole book about this feral girl so hard.
- I so want to believe that today’s xkcd is true because damn, having a sense of humo[u]r about such things is so very, very badass. Seriously, fuck cancer.
- Finally, the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington in Seattle is doing an exhibition on webcomics, but only if you help. Sarra Scherb, guest curator for the upcoming (March – June 2012) Morning Serial: Webcomics Come to the Table needs input to decide exactly what to include in the digital portion of the event, which is where you come in. There’s a survey, see, and it’s open until 5 January, which means you get to make with the clicking and suggest three favorites that should be included.
