Obligatory Quick Thoughts On Marvel/Disney

Hmmmm. VERY hmmmm.

  • Disney targets the preteen girl demographic like no other media company. Will we see a major comics publisher finally going after that niche?
  • Will Disney Adventures return in some fashion?
  • Given the Disney/Henson relationship, will the Muppet-related projects at BOOM! Studios, Archaia Studio Press, and elsewhere be brought back “in-[h|m]ouse”?

Real posting on actual webcomics stuff later.

Hmmm.. aren’t the Marvel characters a mainstay at Universal Studios with their own theme area.. hmmm…

“Mr. Perlmutter will oversee the Marvel properties, and will work directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build and further integrate Marvel’s properties.”

Oh, God.

Spiderman’s symbol will be replaced with the Mickey Mouse silhouette. The Punisher starts a new story arc where he learns a European Cartel is encouraging children to run away from home to a place where they are turned into donkeys and carted off for slave labor. Mr. Fantastic moves the Baxter Building to the Epcott Center. The Hunter’s conquests are all displayed on Discovery Island. Namor the Sub-Mariner becomes the manager of Typhoon Lagoon…

… somebody stop me.

[…] I have whole days when I have to scrape the bottom of the news barrel, and all of this (plus Disney/Marvel) comes about at once? […]

I had read an article from six months ago about Disney bringing in a Think Tank to figure out how to market to boys like they market to girls. This combined with the fact that their boy-focused cable channel, DISNEY XD, runs a hefty amount of Marvel based programming makes it kind of bizarre that this is so shocking to people. This will, of course, continue the disappointing trend of ‘boys like superheros’ ‘girls like princesses’ and no one at Disney product planning will ever have to employ their critical thinking skills.
